STEAM Power: Balloons Over Broadway

Why do they call it STEAM? When we add Science, Technology, Engineering, ART and Math together our students are able to take collaboration, creativity and problem solving to a whole new level. Check out the first Mid Rivers Elementary Balloons Over Broadway Parade, the result of two teachers' innovation and collaboration. Technology teacher Bethany Nill and Art teacher Marcia Sellmeyer combined forces. They shared the book "Balloons Over Broadway" with students, giving them context on the history of the parade and the man who came up with the idea for the balloons, Tony Sarg. (You can do a read-along on YouTube below.)  Then, in Sellmeyer's class, fifth-graders used plastic cups, balloons, straws and other materials to engineer masterpieces mimicking the art of the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. In Nill's class, fifth-graders programmed @Sphero robots to maneuver the parade route. See for yourself in this video, which features photos of students with their parade floats and footage of the parade. Enjoy the holiday!
